Animation Review "Wild Ancestors" (Early Man)
Cave dweller Doug (voiced by Eddie Redmayne) lives with his peaceful tribe in the prehistoric valley where Manchester is now located. The chief of the Bobnar tribe (Timothy Spall) is very old (he is, as it says in the cartoon, already 32 years old), but a cheerful, albeit a little feeble-minded leader.
As is customary for such an audience, they live in harmony with nature, they do not attack anyone, the maximum of what all their aggression boils down to is chasing rabbits, which they then roast at the stake. These stupid savages don't even hunt mammoths, although Doug began to think seriously about this issue.
This idyll of our forest dwellers does not last long. One day, primitive cavemen are attacked by more advanced people from the Bronze Age under the leadership of the audacious Lord Gnus (voiced by Tom Hiddleston). Unlike the savages, they learned how to mine copper ore, make weapons, defensive structures, and various kinds of equipment from it. In battle, they easily prevail over the savages and drive them out of the valley.
The conquerors, by the way, pursue purely selfish goals: they found deposits of copper ore in the valley, so they want to start mining and build their mines here.
Young Doug, saving his friend, the wild boar Kabanini, from the invaders, was captured and taken to the Bronze City, which is ruled on behalf of the queen herself by Lord Gnus (Tom Hiddleston) - a nasty-looking type who speaks with a terrible accent.
The favorite entertainment of the residents of the Bronze City is football. They have an undefeated team "Real Bronzio", the whole city goes to watch the matches, and Lord Gnus gets good income from it.
Having found out this, Doug challenges: if his cavemen beat Real Bronzio in football&"The conquerors must leave the valley. If Real Bronzio wins&"Doug and the company will have to work in the mines all their lives, just like their ancestors. Which, in fact, is evidenced by the rock paintings.
Everything has to be decided in a football match. The only small problem is that none of the cavemen have ever played football.
Review
UK Aardman Animations is a British company that specializes in plasticine animation. It was created in 1972 by Peter Lord and David Sproxton, joined by director Nick Park in 1985. Already under the leadership of the Park, short films about "Wallace and Gromit" were shot, which became very popular.
This success allowed the director to create full-length feature films - "Chicken Run" and "Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit".
In recent years, Aardman Animations has encountered standard computer animation, resulting in the creation of animated films "Flushed Away", "Arthur Christmas", as well as "The Pirates! Band of Misfits", combining plasticine and computer animation. I saw all these cartoons, and I liked them, but still I wanted the Park not to lose its zest and shoot exclusively plasticine cartoons that we all love so much.
Having abandoned experiments in 2D animation, the company returned to what it knew how to do best. In 2015, "Sean the Lamb" was released, which has already been filmed entirely in the spirit of "old Nick Park" - cute plasticine figurines, a lot of humor, fun and adventure. The cartoon was released as a one-off, but the very fact of returning to the original sources was encouraging.
Well, now a new creation from Aardman Animations is "Wild Ancestors" (in the original, the title of the film translates simply as cavemen). To be honest, I was looking forward to the "Early Man". It is clear that this is not such a big event in cinema as, say, the sequel to Avatar, but for me the cartoons of the Park, which have their own unique charm, are, you know, great expectations. The desire was even more sweetened by the fact that, as I learned, football topics are being raised here. And Park, as a true Englishman, had to make a cartoon about football. After all, England is the birthplace of the game called football.
Finally I looked. I really liked it. More so than the director's previous work. Incomparable charm, wonderful humor, great attention to the smallest details, a lot of parodies, including modern football.
Yes, the plot here is quite predictable, but, as they say, that's not the point. Beauty is in the details. So it is here. All kinds of funny little animals, including minor ones - Kabanini, the postman bird, attention to detail - the Bronze City, the stadium, football players. What can I say, there are only video replays that are worth it!
Well, as is customary for the Park, there is a lot of warm humor in the cartoon - from the usual jokes and gags, to all sorts of parodies and banter, seemingly unnoticeable at first glance. It's a special pleasure to watch all this here.
By the way, decorations for 4,800 square meters (including figures, trees and football stadiums) were made for the cartoon. Nick Park himself called it a "mammoth job". And indeed - a titanic work, I take off my hat. I know that almost no one pays attention to this now. Just think, some plasticine figurines, a big deal. In fact, it is very troublesome and hard work. Here, almost everything has to be done manually, and CGI is used only in "cosmetic" goals. But the result is worth it - all the figures are made just fine! Starting from the characters, animals, ending with the smallest details - clothespins, Bobnar's razor, or an hourglass.
"Wild ancestors" are somewhat reminiscent of the Flintstones, then the Croods Family, then in general the movie "Crazy Football", but in general it is quite an independent and original product.
As a result, I really liked it. Almost a five. I will review it again, although I rarely do so. There are a lot of interesting details in the cartoon, you can't see them right away.
So I really advise you to take a look. Especially if, like me, you like the work of Nick Park.
P.S. By the way, the cartoon failed at the box office, which is very disappointing. I think the main reason for the failure of Early Man is that football is an unpopular sport in the USA (it is called soccer there), the majority of fans are in Europe, Great Britain and South America, where the box office is much better. In the USA, "Wild Ancestors" collected some pathetic $ 8 million, while worldwide collections amounted to $ 45 million.
